Understanding Alerts
& Warnings

The Why

Our priority is getting the right information to the right people at the right time so they can make the best decision for their safety and the safety of their family. Every alert we send is guided by that goal. Local emergency alerts and or warnings are sent when a local situation may affect your safety or when you need information to make a safe decision. Before sending an alert, we consider what is happening, where it is happening, who may be affected and how quickly people need to act.

We may issue an alert for:

Evacuation
Shelter-in-place order
Hazardous materials incident
Public safety threat
Major fire
Utility failure
Damaged infrastructure
Unsafe area
Other emergencies affecting the community

We may also send local safety instructions when severe weather causes flooding, road closures, damage or the need to evacuate. The National Weather Service issues official weather advisories, watches, warnings and emergencies.

Advisory

An advisory means a situation may cause problems or create unsafe conditions. Use caution, stay informed and follow any instructions provided.

Alert

An alert is a message that shares important information about an emergency, hazard or changing situation.

Watch

A watch means conditions are possible for a specific hazard. It does not mean the hazard is happening, but you should stay aware and be ready to act.

Warning

A warning means a serious hazard is happening or expected soon. Take action right away and follow the safety instructions provided.
